Cashing in 20p's

We have been saving 20p's for some time now and wish to cash them in. However, the bank will only allow us 5 x £5.00 bags daily. As we have three sweet jars full, it would take months to exchange. The supermarket Change machines charge 9% on all transactions (although you can put through in one hit). Does anyone have any ideas please?

Are you sure you can't lodge more with the bank? I recently lodged £40 in coppers at my bank.

The Post Office will take them in payment for postage, etc - or for deposit into the banks with whom they have an arrangement. They won't change them though - assuming your local PO follows central rules. Some have a mind of their own.

To avoid this situation in future, get an account with a 'proper' bank.

I wonder if any of your local shops will change the odd bag for you. I know when I worked in retail we were always happy to get plenty of change as long as we didn't have to count it all out at busy times.

Have you tried your local post office? I have changed up to £30 worth at my local post office provided they are in £10 bags.

Have you thought about paying the 20p's into your account instead of taking the cash? One of the banks where I live can get stroppy about bags of change but will take the bags of change if you are paying it into an account.

We have taken the money to the bank in £5 bags, but they will only accept five bags. They will put it into our account, but it would take about 50 - 80 trips to get rid of the 20p's!!

What Dzug is suggesting is that you use a real bank and not a piggybank to hoard these coins for savings purposes.

local pub, they always want change. they might not take the whole lot in one go but you could get rid of some

Given that the counter staff only have to weight the bags and not count them I wonder if this is a ploy yo stop people hoarding coins.

If I remember rightly there was a shortage of some coins a few years ago and this was put down to penny jars taking huge numbers of coins out of circulation.

Check that you haven't got any of the undated ones from 2008 (Before any witty answers, they are the only undated ones)

My bank tells me it is about ability to store that much change on the premises. Can't believe evryone wnats to change up their coins at the same time though...

Depending where you live, there may be several bank branches in a small area. Why not go into each in turn, and offload as many as possible at each?

Double check the bags you are putting them in, the money bags you get from banks is £10 for 20p's. I had about £300 worth of 10p's, 20p's and 50p's took them all to the bank and got directed to the Business Banking desk where it was paid into my account and lifted out again in cash.

What I meant was a proper bank like HSBC or Barclays and not a pretend bank like most of the ex Building Societies.

Because that was the only were in which some were minted undated!
