Getting Cheques

I need a cheque for £7.50 to send to someone and I bank with Santander - will they charge me to draw one up?

Santander won't issue a 'counter cheque' for less than £1000 (and then they'll charge you a tenner for it):

Your easiest option might be to send a postal order (which will incur a £1.00 fee):

If the person you're sending the money to has a PayPal account (or is prepared to set one up to receive the money) you could also send money that way. There's no fee if you use a debit card, pay out of your own PayPal account or directly from your bank account.

^^^ Many bank accounts no longer come with cheque books, Gingejbee. The banks planned to abolish cheques over a decade ago and thus no longer provided cheque books with many types of accounts. A change of heart from the banks(with regard to the total abolition of cheques) didn't change the general policy. I've got two Santander accounts. One comes with a cheque book (which I've never used) but the other doesn't.

Right...although I don't see much point in a current account without one (even though I've not written a cheque for several months!)

The easiest way, if you do online banking, is to send a BACS payment at no cost.

I too have a Santander Current Account (in fact Mrs NJ and I have three between us). We don't have a cheque book between us.

The only times I ever use cheques send them to nephews/neices for special birthdays. I can't do it from my Santander so I use another account with another bank that does have an old cheque book and I just transfer the relevant amount in. I can't think of any other situations now where I would need a cheque- I just transfer money online

ric, if it has to be a cheque, another option would be to ask a friend (who does have a chequebook) to write the cheque and give them the £7.50

Sorry Riccor- my answers are responses to others and don't really help you. Options are see if you pay by online transfer (you must have an online account), Paypal (small fee of maybe 40p or so), Postal order or ask them if you can some other way or get someone else to send a cheque

I have an online account with Nationwide & if I need to pay money to an individual I simply transfer the amount on line to a person using their account number & bank code. Easy peasy.

Its really quite perplexing
The group I want to join is only a small group (U3A) and have asked for a chq rather than any other form of payment
