credit card application refusal.

Hi, for some reason I am always refused a credit card. I have a hsbc one which has always been paid on time. What reasons are people denied credit cards? IIve always paid my hsbc card and bills on time so have no idea why ? Will the credit card companies give me a reason if i write to them? I dont see how i can have bad credit. Its worrying me cos ill be applying for a mortgage soon and dont want that refused too! HELP
