What is the maximum cash amount that can be given to a friend without being taxed on it

This is asked so often on AB I'm wondering (a) why it's asked so often and (b) why does no-one ever offer me such a gift.
No tax would be due on the gift. You need to check on inheritance tax though, although that would only come in if teh donor dies within 7 years and the estate is large
