is the code for first direct savings accounts 40-47-86, whilst for current accounts with same bank is 40-47-76?
i thought each bank had one sort code, so a client would always give out the same post code independent of the type of account he/she held. isnt that so?

No, it ain't so. It may be the theory, but there are loads of exceptions. Just a couple of examples from my local area:

One sort code is shared between about half a dozen branches of one bank

A branch of a diferent bank has 3 different sort codes
