Apologies if this type of question has appeared before. I was divorced in 2001 but moved out in 1999. My X got the house and contents, I got a large bill and kept my pension. I have literally just been contacted by a debt recovery agents for an oustanding amount from 1996. They will not tell me what it's for only that it's in my name. I genuinely do not have a clue and I am not, at this time paying it. Can any one tell me how I stand with regards this debt. By the way, my X is disabelled and I had no problems with her getting the house as I can still work. Thanks in advance

Tell them you will not pay anything unless you receive a copy of the bill or whatever it is - they can't refuse to send you a copy. They may be trying to pull a fast one as who would leave a debt from 1996 outstanding til now?
Quite a lot of these old debts are creeping out of the woodwork at present. I think a fair number were old one sold on by various banks. The vast majority are statute barred because no payment or acknowledgement has been made in the last 6 years, but there are some exceptions to this rule.

Also, the firms chasing the debts often have no certain knowledge that the person they are chasing is actually the debtor so it is quite likely you do not owe it.

Do not admit liability & do not pay anything. Ask for proof that you do owe this money. If you look around some other sites - Comsumer Action Group; or www.debthelpuk.co.uk you will find standard letters to modify and send with the necessary fee (1 I think).
