My Asda credit card has been cloned [ it has never left my possession] to the amount of 2 grand [2000] that is its limit.
Luckily during Aug I had only used it once to get petrol at Asda Beckton. East London, and its an automated petrol station .
All the withdrawls wre from Nationwide in Croydon, Wallington & London.
Has anyone else been cloned from this petrol station pls ?

Have you ever used it to shop online?
I sympathise. I haven't used that particular service station but have a friend who had his card cloned at a service station and I had mine cloned too. I believe mine was a service station but do not know for sure. My bank phoned me to see whether my usage was genuine attempting to withdraw large sums of cash in Singapore and the same day in Australia.
Like you the card hadn't left my possession and I had never disclosed my PIN to anyone. Apparently (so I've heard) the Chip and Pin card readers can be modified to transmit your details to an appropriate receiver! Don't know if anyone else has heard of that?
I live on the South coast and one of the
BP garages had people in there cloning
cards ..i never use an auto pump ...
cash is best if you can do it ..also check
your cards on line for fraud ...

No I have never used the card on line, I was lucky in a way because I was so annoyed that it was an automated petrol station and almost out of fuel, I had no choice so I thought I know I will use their card, otherwise it would have been my debit card and I would have lost much more ! that purchase for petrol was the only transaction for the whole month, all the illegal ones start 2 weeks later and of course all cash withdrawls, I have never withdrawn cash as I am too mean to pay the 6 handling fee !!
From now on I shall keep a 35 float and pay cash for petrol, but its made me paranoid and I keep going to get a mini statement every day !
Can you ask the credit card company to withdraw the cash facility from your cards ? to me this would make it safer.
input appreciated.

I had my debit card cloned to the sum of 1000 a couple of weeks ago, I'm always very careful I don't use cash machines and always pay cash at garages so I really don't know how this happened, the only online shopping I've done has been from M&S and Tesco, the money taken was to buy several airline tickets! On the advice of the bank I now have 2 current accounts, one where all my money and transactions are kept and the other one is an account for which I use my card. When I want to use my card for a purchase I just transfer the amount from the first account to the second one, then if anyone does get hold of my card details there won't be any money in there. Also the first account doesn't have a card so nothing can be taken out. A bit complicated at first but it works.

many tks for advice, its something I will have to set up.
but do these crooks ever get caught ? I have been told if its under 2000 they dont bother to investigate just wipe it off !!!
with your airline tickets it should be easy to trace, unless of course bought in another part of the world ? what an easy way to make a living !!!!!
Dee Sa the bank told me that 9 times out of 10 they do catch these fraudsters but there are so many doing it that it takes some time. The second account is a very good idea, I now don't have to worry about using my card.
Question Author
gelda, once again thank you for your help.
