estate agents boards !

Hi probably a silly question but is it true that even if your not selling your house you can get a local estate agent to put one of their boards up at your house and they pay you an advertising fee ?

I seem to remember an Estate Agent being prosecuted for doing this. I think it was regarded as deception by them trying to claim they had more business than they actually did.
