He would have been quite annoyed at that, as he couldn't understand how he was still paying 75% of his bill, (he was given a 25% discount as he was on his own). We did try to claim, as he was only on a small pension, but he had money invested and so that was counted apparently.
'Council Tax Exemption Class O: A dwelling of which the Secretary of State for Defence is the owner, held for the purposes of armed forces accommodation other than accommodation for visiting forces within the meaning of Part I of the Visiting Forces Act 1952.'

I agree, age is not a factor re council tax - BUT - have you claimed attendance allowance. If not you will need to determine if you are eligible. If you are eligible you only get it from the date you apply. My old man didn't know about it - and neither did I - and he missed out for five years! Check it out quickly. It's not means tested but depends if you are getting help - professional or family or if are in residential care. It's not a fortune but 'every little helps'.
