Home and content insurance
16 Answers
I have my home and contents insurance through M&SMoney.. I have 8 yrs no claims but hav'nt claimed on any insurance for at least 15 yrs and I have just recieved my policy renewal. Obviously It has gone up, even though the house price has dropped. But I was shocked to see it's actually gone up Over 10%..From £427 to £471..I rang them to say I thought it was a bit much and was told it was due to the increase in insurance premium tax.. I obviously told them i'm shopping around..Anyone any recomendations?

We always shop around each renewal - insurance companies to rely on people not bothering to move! BTW I have my car insured with M&S though, it was the best rate for me this time round.
IPT went up on 4th January by 1%, from 5% to 6%. Premiums are generally rising to cover the cost of fraudulent claims. Is your home cover valuation based on the number of rooms or rebuilding costs? Valuation of contents, and type of cover will also affect the premium, although Index linking should not make a great difference this year.
I’m paying less that £110 for buildings and contents insurance. The contents cover is to the value of £50k and the buildings to £1,000,000 – but in reality the buildings would be limited to the complete re-build costs.
So unless you live in a castle, you are being ripped off big-time for not shopping around.
As others have indicated, cheapest is not necessarily the best – you will discover this when it comes to making a claim.
