on the nation wide advert it says that you can protect your no claims bonus no matter how many claims you make, but surley the no claims bonus is for people who don't make any claims, i don't understand what they mean.

This entitles you to discount on your premium. You do of course have to pay extra for having the privilege of keeping it protected.
If you weren't to protect this and you made a claim, your insurance premium would go up.
What they are saying is you can keep your 'no claims' protected, so if you do make a claim, no matter how many, it wont effect your premium.
Most insurers provide this option anyway.
