Minimum limit on paying by Debit Card/Cheque book

In theory, is it possible to pay for something using a Visa Debit Card or a cheque, if the price in question is 1 pence? The reason I ask, is that I have a very small payment of about 40 pence to make to a company and I'm wondering if one can pay very small amounts using a Visa card or cheque or if the amount has to be over a certain limit such as �1. In theory there's no minimum amount that you can spend but each company that you pay with a debit card is charged by visa - in your case the charge may be higher in value than the payment. I wouldn't see any problem with sending a cheque (the postage would be close in value to the payment!).
You could phone your bank and make a telephone banking payment, depending on which company you're paying : they may or may not accept this form of payment.
