Opening a new account with a bad credit rating

I have a pretty bad credit rating at present due to a few financial problems in the last couple of years.  I am now trying to sort this out but I need to open a new account for the house I live in.  (shared rented property, we need the account to deal with all household bills, rent etc.).

Can anyone tell me if I will be able to open an account - all I need is a basic one with no overdraft facility/debit card/cheque book etc. If you think I can does anyone know of a bank which is likely to look kindly on me and which has a basic no frills account.

Thanks.

Barclays do a good basic account which you will qualify for http://www.personal.barclays.co.uk/BRC1/jsp/brccontrol?task=articlesocial&value=3315&site=pfs

You will be able to apply online and then just take your documents into a branch to verify yourself.  or get an application from a branch and then send all your documents recorded delivery to Head office processing Centre.

This account allows bacs credits, direct debits and a atm card

nationwide also do a nice basis flex account

Natwest do a basic 'Step' Account that can later be upgraded to a normal current account depending on how you run the 'Step' one - They guarantee to give this account to anyone as long as they have a UK address - remember the advert they had a couple of years back??
