Sukhumvit is where most of the expat nightlife is, the low numbered Sois are more central. Sathorn is the Central Business District, condos tend to be more expensive. Also depends on proximity to transport links, such as the Skytrain (BTS) and underground (MRT).
You can get a good condo, 100sqm, for about 50,000 Baht (approx 1,050 pounds), and cheaper is definitely possible. Websites such as CB Richard Ellis or Savills deal in high end new condos. For the cheaper, older units, private owners list them and an agent will show you round 6-10 units per day that in theory meet your specifications. The agents fees are charged to the owner.
