Yes, the term for this sort of thing is SUGGING - Selling Under the Guise of Gaining INformation. The more usual form involves a chap coming up in the street, claiming to undertake a survey. Later in the conversation one is offered the one-off special opportunity to buy something.
More subtle operators will tend to post a question on an unsuspecting website, then the operator under a different name will seek to answer that question by linking to a website that amazingly offers the obscure service being sought by the OP.
Brighter regulars on such websites are now wise to the technique and often thwart the process by posting cynical answers that completely screw up the attempt at source.
