Opening bank account ABROAD

I've been told I need to get "a letter of introduction" from my uk (natwest) bank. How long will this take does anyone know. Ps the country abroad I want to open an account in is south Africa and although I am not a scitizrnof that country my parents are and thus I want to have money there for a) if my parents need it fog emergency and b) for me to use when I visit on hols etc .
