Can i claim tax back for my Union contributions? If so how do i go about this and what are the circumstances which allow this?

Union membership fees ARE tax-deductible where HMRC deems that such membership can be regarded as necessary for the type of employment undertaken AND the relevant union is approved for that purpose by HMRC.

For example, membership of the National Union of Teachers is tax-deductible.

i used to pay my union membership via my council paypacket and the tax was taken off after the payment went out! but that is not a refund per se!
No, you can claim tax allowance on various professional subscriptions in relation to your job, but not union fees.
I think you can but ONLY if membership of the union was a requisite of the job. As there are no such jobs now that I know of NJ is correct. However you can still get tax relief on contributions to a professional organisation which is not a trade union.
