It was because they took 30% of his award and claimed 30% of the premiums he no longer had to pay for the next 10 years.
Even if a company does it for you they still need you to provide all the paperwork , dates, amounts etc then they just copy the info into a standard letter and charge you a huge bill.
I know some prefer to let someone do it but I think if you use the MSE site template letter it will be simple

purple, there are many and I don't think we're allowed to refer on this site, but I use a company to reclaim our PPI - they do take up to 25% of your recovery, but that suits us (as has been said before, not everyone has time or inclination to do their own chasing etc.) I've been pleased with the company we were referred to through work (NHS).
Have you been in touch with the people you paid PPI to and asked them when they will be paying you back?

Although I have taken out many loans I only took out PPI once because I needed the money and was told I had to take it if I wanted the loan. However, earlier this year the company who sold me the PPI wrote to me asking if I considered I'd been mis-sold the PPI, I replied yes and they sent me a full refund of c.£1960 plus interest taking it up to c. £2400.
I had taken the loan out with Northern Rock.
So ask for your money back yourself before involving any outside company.
