How can I be on a combined tariff which says it is capped until May 2013, and I get a letter today saying the price is going up £30 a month? Doesn't make sense to me.

Capped doen't mean held it means there will be a limit to how much it goes up.
You mean your monthly payment is going up?

Could it be that are using more than was estimated so you weren't paying enough to cover the winter bills?

If so, the cost of the fuel hasn't increased.
Yes, it'll be based on usage. A capped rate is a capped rate per unit not a capped monthly charge
