Claiming tax back

Just had an email from a friend about claiming tax back on laundering company uniform. Ive never claimed for this before...if it's possible to do so !!
Any suggestions if i can (im a gardener and work for local authority) and if i can, how long can i go back to ?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.i've asked 2 of my work colleagues via facebook what it was they claimed and they have claimed a back dated allowance apparently. they cannot tell how much it is as it was paid through a rebate on their monthly pay slip. however, before the rebate they rang the tax office and were told they can claim 6 years of allowance. i don't agree with you that i should not answer, i always answer if i feel fairly confident,
The confident answer is that is you are basic rate tax payer and wear a uniform you launder yourself you can claim against £60 tax per year backdated 6 years.
This works out at £12 per year (20% of £60)
If you are a higher rate tax you get - £24 per year (40% of £60)
If you are in certain occupations you can claim more.
If your employer launders your uniform or gives you the correct amount of dry cleaning tokens you can claim nothing.

My uniform dry cleaning allowance is incorporated in my tax code. I found out that my tax code was different to my colleagues` and after discussion, I found out my code was incorrect. This was quite a few years ago but I spoke to the Tax Office, they sent me a self-assessment form, updated my code and refunded me something like £50 or £60 which was about 5 years` worth. There are no receipts or anything else involved, just an allowance in my tax code. Maybe it`s this system hammerman is referring to.
