Lodging a sterling cheque in Australia

I want to send a cheque to my nephew who is living in Australia. However it was only after I had written the cheque that I started to wonder if it is any use to him in Australia.
What I mean is - can he lodge a cheque for an amount in sterling into his Australian bank account?

It can be done - but only at the expense of massive fees.

For example, here in the UK, Barclays charges a minimum of £20 (consisting of a £4 'negotiation' fee and a £16 'collection' fee) for accepting a foreign cheque. The charge rises up to a maximum of £100 (£60 for 'negotiation' and £40 for 'collection), dependent upon the value of the cheque.

You can only write cheques in sterling, as I found out to my considerable cost one time.
