Paying copyrights

Hi there. Ive recently finished off making a short comedy sketch and want to publish it to various sites. The problem is there are 5 or 6 songs throughout the sketch, and also a small portion of the A-Team video start.

What are the rules concerning acquiring the rights to allow these on my video? and where can I acquire them?

What Andy's answer does gloss over, though, is that what you are doing is a breach of the copyright that exists both in the music and in the A Team stuff.

Whilst it may be unlikely that you will be caught, if you are, it could be expensive - The Verve had to give all of their royalties from 'Bittersweet Symphony' to the Rolling Stones because they lifted the violin part from a Stones track without permission.

The technically correct answer to your question is that you go to the copyright holder for each piece of music and the video clip and ask for a 'synch licence', which they may or may not charge you for.
