Can someone explain (in simple terms).Have just been watching Homes under the Hammer and one of the buyers said she was a venture capitalist and I don't really know what it means. Just curious. Thanks.

they invest money in companies and are looking for high returns
They invest their own (and/or other people's) money in mainly higher-risk projects and are looking for higher returns.

Ventue capitalist may buy a chain like Comet or HMV (at a knock down price) and hope they can either revive the company or if not sell the stores off to make some cash.

I believe someone bought Comet last year (6 months ago?) with that idea but of course it never came to anything and they still went bankrupt.
Management Buy Outs (where employees purchase their company from existing owners) are usually bankrolled by VCs
Watch Dragons' Den on the TV.
I suppose the Phoenix Four were venture capitalists when they bought out MG for £10. They pocketed £40 million or so before it collapsed
