Letter Received From Equiniti Re Shares

I have received a letter from Equiniti in relation to an entitlement in a company. They want me to contact them in writing enclosing a utility bill as proof of identity. I have looked up Equiniti on the internet and they did adminster the share register of a company in which I used to have shares. I am not inclined to send off any form of identification, so will have to forego any entitlement. It wouldn't be very much in any case, and I can't believe that I didn't cash in any cheques! Has anyone else received such a letter?

No - but I'd want to know more about the company, how they got my details etc., before I sent them any person details.

I have a few stocks and shares inherited from a relative and they are administered by Equiniti. Maybe worth a telephone call?

Equiniti are a reputable company i have dealt with them for years,the money they have for you will probably be a dividend payment from when you had a shareholding.I would say it is safe to go ahead there is no harm in sending a utility bill it will only confirm that you live at that address,hope this helps

Yes my parents recieved the same letter today its fraudent activity report it as its criminal activity, Equiniti are in the process of sueing the people who send these letters out, the postcode is wrong on the letter, My advise is send no details, why should you, the letter reads it will not give you any details until you send them your personal details - rings alarm bells? there is a bit more about it online Best to report it to FraudUK Action a new group set up to report this type of crime.

My father in law just received exact same letter today. He had not got any shared or anything. Bit strange them asking for utility bill?

It's not at all unusual for big organisations to have several different postcodes (even for the same building if they've got separate departments). For example the DVLA uses quite a few postcodes for the same building. So that doesn't set any alarm bells ringing for me.

If in doubt, simply phone Equiniti using the number shown here rather than any number shown in the letter:

I would get their phone number by Googling, not from the letter you received.

Ring them up to check if it came from them.

My husband recieved a letter as well from them on saturday .... hmm what to do next is a big question , hope someone who knows more posts on here as to what to do as ive heard they wont divulge anything at all over the phone

Yes. I have received the same letter. I feel the same - i'm not inclined to mail off proof of ID without some explanation of entitlements i may have not claimed.

Quite a number of us here are familiar with Equiniti.

Perhaps one of you who is bothered by unexpected letters from them could scan and post via TinyPic (having removed personal details), at least then a more informed view of the authenticity of these letters could be offered.

I am well acquainted with Equiniti and have had not particular problems, although there may be scammers out there using Equiniti as a cover.

i received an equiniti letter

i wasn't too surprised as they administered the sale of some Friends Provident shares i had.

Naturally they won't divulge any details over the phone, but if you are worried about the authenticity of the letter they should be able to confirm that they have recently written to you/your reference # quoted on the letter

It is a legitimate letter sent by equiniti themselves. It is informing previous shareholders/next of kin of any unclaimed dividend payments and/or takeover payments.

Understandably there are some doubts as at first it does seem slightly dodgy. It is surprising how many people dont inform equiniti of a change of address/bank details and just dont keep track of their investments.

Equiniti are the registrars for some of the biggest companies in the world; notably lloyds, bt, santander, barclays. They are regulated by the FSA and were formally called lloyds tsb registrars.

Many thanks to all who replied to my post. I thought it might have been a scam ans was prepared to ignore it. But I didn't and have now received a cheque for £23+. Not a fortune but very nice to receive. So thanks for convincing me!
