If you pay a cheque into your bank account in the UK, how long does it take to clear?

For more on marking an answer as the "Best Answer", please visit our FAQ.When I worked for a bank it was three and a half days ie not before midday on day four so if you paid in on Monday you could drawn after noon on Thursday. As far as I know it is at least three days as you pay it in Say Monday and it goes off to clearing (where all the banks exchange their cheques) reaching there Tuesday (by courier) and day three Wed it reaches the other bank/branch.
Different accounts have different clearing periods but around 4 working days is fairly common.
