You need your debit card to pay in cash. There's no charge.

To pay in cheques you need a paying in slip plus an envelope that Smile provide. Some Post Offices MAY (and the emphasis is on may) have a small stock of such envelopes. You get a receipt for the envelope, not the contents.
No need to Google- just look on the smile website

there are loads of ways to pay into a smile current account.
electronically - you can transfer cash electronically from another bank account.
cash - you can pay in cash via any UK Post Office or any branch of The Co-operative Bank free of charge using your ATM card.

Thanks but I know all that, the qeustion is, can I pay in cash WITH A PAYING IN BOOK for no charge? I know how to do it with an ATM card and I know how to pay cheques in, I have envelopes etc.
I thought from my posting the answer was blindingly obvious but apparently not

It sounds like you need it spelling out.

NO - you can't pay cash in with a paying in slip - either with or without a charge. They do not offer that service.

how is it blindingly obvious? where does it say what you cannot do? Do you assume that if something is not mentioned it must be prohibited?
Maybe it's worth asking your bank or the post office?
I assume that the list of actions possible is a complete list of the services that the PO intend to offer and that their Horizon counter terminal is programmed accordingly. That is there will be no option to do what you want. I know from using one that that is normally the case.

Now if it's been misprogrammed it might work - the only way you will find out is to try doing it. Even if it appears to work there is scope for things going wrong further down the line and for your credit to be delayed/lost.
I work in a Post Office and to be honest I can't remember (I'm at home not work). Each bank has different services through the Post Office, some you can pay cash in with a paying in slip (I know Halifax is one of these), some, like HSBC you can pay cash in with a debit card, and some (like NatWest) you can't pay in at all, although you can withdraw cash. I suggest that you just pop into your local Post Office and ask them! Or you can give the Post Office helpline a ring on 0845 611 2970.
Though I have just checked the link that factor-fiction posted and it does say that you need an ATM card to pay cash in at the Post Office.
