I've just got a credit card to pay for an item I got last year on buy now pay nothing for 12 months. Ive paid some of it off but not all and it is now coming to an end so have decided to use the credit card to extend it slightly.

What I want to know is, that would surely just be classed as a normal credit card purchase and not an advance. Not entirely sure what advances are.

Is it cash withdrawal?
If I understand you correctly, you are going to use the credit card to pay for the balance on the item you bought - so you are going to go to the shop (or wherever) and pay the balance off by using your card? This is a purchase. It would only be a cash advance if you put your card into an ATM and drew out money on it. IMO.
if it's from another credit provider it'll be classed as a balance transfer (which usually attract a 3% fee)
