I have been told I am no longer entitled to Tax Credits and that I have been overpaid by 490. Must I pay this back in one lump sum or in installments?

you can pay it in installments. best thing to do is contact them but i'm pretty sure you don't have to pay it all in one go.

Thank you, cazz218.

i'd check that you really have been overpaid first though, as i heard a rumour that loads of people had been 'overpaid'. the tax credits system has been in a bit of chaos since its introduction.

My hours of work recently changed goldenboy, so I reckon they're probably correct, although I've been informed that I'm no longer entitled to any credits, so I might appeal that?
I had a simliar problem with the working family credit ,my pay went down by 40 per month and they then credited me 40 per month - however they then wrote and said that I had been underpaid by something like 200 so gave me that without me asking, I have now been told ive been overpaid by 200 so I wont get the benefit until the end of October - it seems that they dont know what theyre doing - my circumstances have never changed.
they've admitted to me that their system in incomprehensible. Every couple of months I get told I've been either over or underpaid. I ring them up, tell them nothings changed and they say they'll look into it. A week later I ring and they say I'm right and payments will continue as before.

Don't take it lying down, unless your pay has increased significantly I suspect you will probably still be entitled to something
