If I believe that a firm has paid money into my account that does not belong to me (it may well do !), is there period of time after which I am entitled to the money?

I am confident there is no actual time limit.

Contact them and ask, I know I would because there is always that chance they will ask for it back.

This often get's asked, there is no limit they'll realise at some point and want it back.
No, if it's not your money, it's still not your money in a year's time.
Similarly, if you use your debit card and the money doesn't go out of your account for 9 months, then you're not off scott-free. The company can take it, without warning, at any time at all. Just had the pleasure of this conversation today :-(

Immediately move it into another account and keep quiet for a couple of months.

Last year I finished a 3-month job with NatWest. They kindly paid me an extra 600 for a month's part-time work, and only realised when I stupidly called to ask for my P45, which was already being processed...

The moral of the story is to be extremely discreet.
