Extra Independent Finance/accounting Work To Progress/gain Promotion

I was employed on a six month contract as half accounts payable and half finance. Today it was renewed and due to staff leaving, new staff, a company reshuffle and accounts payable being understaffed, I am now only accounts payable.

I'm a level 4 AAT student, who is relatively new to finance and hoping to get as much relevant experience from this job to progress my career.

I have a company laptop for independent work, which my boss hinted at. The issue is, everything I can think of to do outside of work to benefit the company is already being performed by staff during work hours.

I will no longer prepare and post journals, track missing costs (e.g. rent and rates, vehicle leases), complete balance sheet recs, etc. I need to find work which will benefit the business and the progression of my career in my own time.

This may sound vague, but as I'm panicking about being pidgeon-holed, a suggestion of any kind of finance related activity to benefit the business would be very much appreciated. I really enjoy my job, but I guess you could say I'm also very aspirational.

I'm aiming to go into financial accounting.

why would you want to do stuff outside work that benefits the company?

Because then the experience can be confirmed by my employer when I apply for a future job . . . ?

i'm not getting this - you want to do work, outside of work time (ie not getting paid for it) for your company? I would steer clear of an employer who wanted you to do that in order to progress
