Cost Of Care Home Residence
42 Answers
Since a Local Authority will raid the bank account of a resident to pay for his/her care, would it not be prudent to ensure that one's bank balance was kept at, say, £500 and not more? With interest rates so low, one would not be losing much if all personal savings were kept in the 'Bank of Southern Mattress', well away from prying eyes.

FF.....some of us are doing the holidays/fast cars in our later years....☺
I do know things are changing in 2016 I think it is.....You can be in care and keep much more of your savings and house value.....but then how can you spend it.....and I'm not a great believer in saving to leave the kids an inheritance....☻

Not the same, FF...but similar I suppose......There is no private health care for kidney patients.
When MrG was in hospital a very rich consultant was admitted...he had to have the same care as the other patients and didn't like it.
He added.....he brought his own nurse...she was blonde and gorgeous...... his PA....she was blonde and gorgeous...... :-)

Whatever our views a large number of elderly people care very much about leaving money to their family it is very important to them. Some of those will be tempted to opt for assisted dying to make sure the cash goes to the relatives. Yes I know that as it stands 2 docs must be sure there is only 6 months left, but as in Holland the limits will be slowly but surely dropped. Holland has just added Depression and Dementia to the list of conditions where a person can ask for assisted dying . You tell me how a person with severe dementia can make an logical decision about ending their life??
Scylax asks ''Should we put our money in the Bank of Southern Mattress''
All I can now say is ''Put your money where your mouth is''

As i said on the other thread, Eddie, depression and dementia are perhaps two conditions that make it understandable. However, we are not Holland and refusing to pass a law on the basis that people might not follow it, makes no sense to me. We have no regulation or checks at the moment and i think any doubts are better investigated before a death and not after.
The only thing that my mother says now which shows some awareness is... I want to go to God.
If she had known what was going to happen to her she would have taken her own life early....pushed into it far too soon by those who oppose assisted dying because life is sacred.
I should be able....with help....to decide to end my mother's life today.
None of the above is about money....but dignity.

Exactly gness. There seems to be some myth with dementia that people cannot know what they want. It's not true in my experience and even as just a carer, i can tell which ones would want to end their lives (only a very small handful, admittedly) and which ones wouldn't. Just because verbal communication isn't perfect, it doesn't mean they are a complete mystery. If that were true, we wouldn't be able to look after them at all- or babies- or animals.
