Sending Cheques/checks From Uk To Us

Hi guys

I need to make 12 monthly payments to an American bank. However they will not accept a DD (!!). So I propose to send 12 cheques postdated (which they also don't like!). Anyway each payment is for a relatively small sum $144. Now - my question is. Do I send the UK cheques (NatWest) in $ or £? I am opting for $ as that way at least I know the correct amount will be paid in. But just wondered if any of you have done similar and can add your knowledge and experience to the question.

I haven't, but why send cheques - why don't you send the money by PayPal? That's secure, and you'll have a record of it. You'll be paying a conversion fee if you send a cheque - do you know what that might be in terms of your bank charges?

Would it not be safer to do an International transfer of funds every month? I've only ever had experience the other way, of a North American bank insisting on sending me a cheque on overpaid taxes every six months -for $12 which the bank wanted to charge me £25 to process!

That's what I was thinking, retro - the charges for handling and conversion can be substantial.

I agree, do a funds transfer and shop around for who will do it cheapest. You might even be able to do it directly from your bank account, I think I can.

Have already sent one transfer - to the cost of £22. Hence I though this way might be easier. Might ask them if they accept Paypal - but I'm not holding out much hope :-)

If you write a cheque on your Natwest account in $US it will either incur mega fees on both sides or more likely bounce

If you buy a $US cheque from Natwest that will work but they will charge for it. Best way is to find a cheaper bank

Don't see why you expect a US bank to participate in the UK DD system

Does the American bank have a branch in this country? If so, could you pay directly to that branch with DD and let them sort out the transfer?
