Attendance Allowance

Unfortunately my husband is terminally ill and has just been awarded attendance allowance under special rules. He has also just been admitted to a private care home (self funded), will this affect the attendance allowance. He has also been put forward for NHS continuing health care, which we understand may make a contribution towards the care home. If so, would the attendance allowance still be payable? Appreiate any guidance. 2Margaret

So sorry your husband is ill. I'm not 100% sure, but I would have thought that your AA ceased now. Get in touch with the department who warded you it in the first place.

As long as your husband is self funded he is still entitled to the Attendance Allowance:

"If you enter a care home permanently there is a simple principle: if you are paying all your care home fees without any financial help from your local authority then you will continue to receive Attendance Allowance. If you receive help, however, it will stop after 28 days."

Sorry to hear of your husband’s condition – if he is awarded NHS continuing healthcare, then the NHS will pay 100% of all care costs (I believe that this would include the cost of the care home fees).

I would recommend you search the web re NHS continuing healthcare – so that you are aware of the process used to decide eligibility; and you can then make an informed decision as to whether your husband is likely to qualify.

a very difficult time for you

Make sure you keep all the official slips with his diagnosis on it
as I found - officials tend to make less difficulties if they are looking a form with 'cancer under treatment' on it - or something equally dire....
