Learning Grant Error

I've just been informed by my LEA, that they miscalculated how much I was eligible for last year and should have been given �500 not �1500. They have now taken the �500 I would have been having next year to go towards repaying the �1000 and then want me to pay �500. The letter says that I will be able to negotiate payments and I was wondering if anyone has been through something similar and how much you were able to negotiate weekly/monthly payments down to? They have admitted that it was their error and would it be unlikely that I would be allowed to pay the amount back when I have finished my degree and have a job? Thanks
