Contactless Debit Cards

Have more to add re these - as you know I lost my debit card and was reimbursed with a new one maybe 2 weeks ago. Of course I have bought many things with the new card and always entered my new pin number - fine- just a half an hour ago I called to a butchers bought meat and he handed me payment slip - but I said but I haven't entered my pin number - no he said it was contactless.

Now I didn't enjoy my tea there - gulped it down- I never wanted contactless never - what happened there - would it help to go to Santander tomorrow and explain that I want my card to be "pinned". Thanks for any answer.

I am laughing now but when I came out of this butchers I swore like a parrot - I know it wasn't the butchers fault. But I have enough trauma with these cards - I am so careless and yet so careful that I will see Santander tomorrow - another bloody jaunt to the other side of town. Ah well.

Just to clarify - are we talking about a screen or a hand type device ; where the card has to be held against

We all get contactless ones when we don;t ask nor want them. Because they don't care for your concerns over security as, as a customer of the banks, you are not important. There are plenty more out there if you don't want to accept what they are prepared to insist on. Even if you demand a non-contactless card you have a hard time getting them to comply. It's the old saying, "The customer is always irrelevant and a nuisance"; or something like that. Not found a butchers' where they served tea myself, but just be sure you weren't billed for someone else's. No one cares.

I've had a contactless card (that I didn't ask for) for about 3 years and have only used the feature twice. Far more importantly, as already mentioned, I have never ever paid for something by giving the card to the seller (ie butcher). I can't see why that would happen.

Has the card got to be held against a screen or does it work, held against the machine where you would normally type your pin in ?

I have only used mine once and I had to hold it against the screen of the machine

Yes, instead of inserting your card and typing your PIN you can just hold it against the screen. It's the same machine.

When I've used mine you just hold it about an inch or so away from the normal machine that you put your card in. Of course it has to be a machine that's enabled with the feature. Instead of the message 'enter your pin' you get a flashing sort internet signal graphic.

It's much easier......saves faffing around with the keypad. However, I would be very, very wary of I-Phone payment apps - not enough security there. And also, never let the card out of your hand now, science means they can bring the payment machine to you.

no as I say mug me - many times my card has been taken off me then brought the machine to me for pin I mean. God only knows why I have lost my card so bloody often - having said that I do have an online account and keep an eye on it.

Many years ago I got £700 taken out of my account and another £30 from oxford - had to go to police. Must say Santander reimbursed me but then why shouldn't they should be looking after my money more carefully.

dt I don't mind faffing it is what I have been doing all my working life and I loathe change so do not want contactless. Bloddy ***.

See this moving faster and faster to a more digital world - we will be zombied out. Wouldn't surprise me in the very more future - online account will be removed.

Have you thought about paying for amounts under £30 by cash? A bit radical but hey, give it a go.

My work colleague lost her contactless card last Saturday night. She only realised on Monday. Called the bank to cancel it. 4 transactions taken on Sunday all under £20. Luckily she has got the money back.

well went over to Santander on the othr side of town and gave her back the card - she was very nice but surprised on the other hand - no I do not want the contactless - I do know however this will "new" card next weeek will not be contactless (hopefully) but if I lose that the future will be contactless whether we like or not.

There may come a day JJ , but until then the customer has a choice.

I have had my contactless card for a good few years and never used it as such yet.
