The Nationwide Debit Card has no charges and their Credit Card only charge if you use it to withdraw cash.
Ian, forgot to mention if you are paying in a foreign currency, say euros, the Nationwide give an excellent rate of exchange, which is far better than the tourist rate. I never take foreign currency or travellers cheques when I go abroad. I use the local ATM's/Banks. It has saved me quite a lot of money over the years.
If you have a HSBC account, upgrade your account to a Bank Account Plus and you will not be charged for overseas cash withdrawals...as well as free annual family travel insurance! It's about 10 a month but has it's benefits.
