Debt counsellors do not charge you and they can offer you a very 'hands on' service, e.g. by making telephone calls on your behalf to your creditors or helping you to write letters to your creditors. Only see a reputable debt counsellor that the CAB refer you to - don't be tempted to call any "debt counsellors" you see advertised in the Yellow Pages for instance. They often either will charge you for their service or are paid by commission on any debt consolidation loan they sell you.
