Couples Tax Allowance
5 Answers
Has anyone claimed the tax allowance when one of them earns less than £11,500? Seems a good idea but wonder if there are any sneaky pitfalls I should be aware of. I get a total of £10,256 pension and pay no tax.

Have a look here if you haven't already. It is worth around £240 to you If he pays higher rate tax though i don't think it applies. Have you included any other income such as certain benefits?

My wife was made redundant from her job and now only works part-time so I claimed the allowance. It was easy and there were no issues. I am a higher rate tax payer and it doesn't make a great deal of difference to my monthly salary, but getting anything back from the Government is a win in my book. You get an extra tax free allowance and there are no complications
From the gov.uk website:
You can get Marriage Allowance if all the following apply:
you’re married or in a civil partnership
you don’t earn anything or your income is £11,500 or less
your partner’s income is between £11,501 and £45,000 (or £43,000 if you’re in Scotland)
So I'm not sure you should have been getting it, samuel. You may find you end up having to pay it back
