Out of curiosity, a fair few have gone, but have I missed any? I recall:
Woolworth, BHS, Comet, Maplins, Dixons, Virgin Records, MFI, BlockBuster, Toys r Us, DOITALL, Books etc, Northern Rock, Carillion, Habitat, The Cornish Pasty Shop, Poundworld. Plus numerous small biz like book shops and electric parts, That is about it. Anybody remember any others? Thanks.
>>> Plenty Woolworth stores in Australia, and Blockbusters
That indirectly reminds me of a name that has long since disappeared from UK High Streets but which I've seen in Ostend, Paris, Bratislava and in countless other European towns and cities: C & A.
All the bespoke tailors seem to have disappeared from the High Street. Apart from Hepworth's and Jackson's I remember Burton's, John Collier, March, Weaver to Wearer. I presume that nobody apart from the great and the good buys a bespoke suit anymore.
What you've probably got is a store operated by SUK Retail Limited (who bought up the leases on most of the stores vacated by Staples), who trade as Office Outlet:

Thanks everybody! A horrifying trip down memory lane here but C&A yes what a shocker! Habitat is of course in Homebase but that was in danger a few weeks back (sold for £1) and I know what about London men fashion chain TAKE 6? One two three vanished. I will stop or I will get lost in it all.
C & A was my choice for cheap but quality clothing. I still regularly wear 2 polo shirts I bought from them 22 years ago. They still thrive on the continent.
I confess I cannot recall Peter Pell, even though I was brought up in Wallsend since 1949. There was a dry-cleaners called Martin's, who offered a 59 minute service.
