It's coming up to 3 years since I received 3 points for a speeding offence. It's also coming up to the time for me to renew my car insurance - I've stuck with the same company who continued to give the cheapest quote, despite surcharging me (about 27 p.a.) for my misdeed. To say my licence is clean, do I have to formally apply to the Licencing Authority to have it physically removed (& presumably pay a fee) or is it in order to just consider it discharged after the prescribed time is up?

Hope you clever people out there know the answer!

I think points last for 4 years anyway, but most insurance companies count points for five years, regardless of if you get them removed from your licence.
Yep MsBadely is correct, the effect of the points last 3 years, they stay on your licence for 4 years and for the purposes of your insurance company they exists for 5 years. I've always thought it's out of order for them to punish you beyond the law but there's very little you can do about it, legally.

Cheers folks - that tells me all I need to know! And thanks for the link to the DVLA - I expect that 19 will have gone up in another year!!

I noticed once the 4 years is up and you change address the points disapear for free, so you could always move into your parents house, and then back home!!!

Some insurance companys ask about the last 3 years for points and claims not the last 5. I'm sure elephant was one of them.

I do wonder, if you lied to the insurance company after 4 years and haveing no points physically on your license how could the insurance company every know?, i'd never want to do it myself as they will try anything not to pay up but just curious.
