In MSExcel, how do I make the field – which generally appears at the top of the spreadsheet – display cell content (e.g., formulas)?

Do you mean you want the cell to show "=(a1*3)" for example rather than the value of the formula?
Try formatting the cell to text rather than general.

When you click on the cell, does it not show the formula in the formula bar?

In the latest version There is a "Formulas" Tab at the top. Click that and about three quarters of the way along the top is "Show Formulas". Click that and all your cells will show formulas instead of values. To reverse back to values simply click "Formulas" again.

There are similar options in earlier versions though I cannot remember the details.

the keystroke is either f2 or f4

Hitting F2 shows the current selected cell in formula form. Clicking away from that cell returns it to values.
