Labour costs account for part of your answer. It's far cheaper to employ workers in some countries than in others.

Import tariffs are another important factor. If, for example, a Japanese car manufacturer makes their products in their home country, and then exports them to the EU, they have to pay high import tariffs (which can make their vehicles very expensive to potential purchasers). If they move their production to an EU member state though, they can then export them to all other EU countries without facing any tariffs at all.

Nissan investing in Sunderland has got to be great for local jobs, encourages locals to buy the brand, and saves the import cost. It's a no-brainer.
