Stolen Inheretence

My Father was born 1915 and died 2001 in Canada. He was British born. On his death he left 2 million dollars to me and 2 million dollars to my brother. My brother living in Canada and still does went to see him on his death bed. There were 2 envelopes one for me and one for my brother. My brother studying in Canada at the time took both envelopes and put them in his bank account. I never saw my 2 million dollars. He says he needed the money for books and took mine. Im now skint and want it back. What would it be worth today and how do i go about getting it back. He would never hand it over if I asked. I am Canadian born but have lived in England all my life. We have a very unusual surname so the accounts i would think would be easy to find. My father & brothers accounts are in Canada AND MY ACCOUNT IS IN bRITAIN.

Actually you can't of been a child as dad was 86ish.

Bob, being in your 80s does not prevent a man from fathering a child but yesterday was in her 40s when her father died.

Your brother sounds like a real peach. Without a will (does Canada have a register of wills?) you are assuming theft by fraudulent use of a cheque some 20 years ago. As you have no money you would need a lawyer to act for you on a "no win no fee" basis. They will only do this if they think there is a good chance of success & I guess they wouldn't have confidence in achieving that.

I think the best chance of getting something would be to appeal to your brother's better nature (if he has one!). Failing that maybe a solicitors letter indicating that you intend to take legal action to recover your share which may require the involvement of the police regarding the theft would prompt some action. Canadian laws and procedures are very similar to the UK's (but I believe Quebec is different) and Wills go to probate and there are registers for each Province, so you need to know which Province he died in. You can file an application for a copy of the Will to the Probate Court for a fee.

This assumes he left a Will. If he died intestate then it is going to be extremely difficult
