no i am not on that kind of money, but i honestly think our PM, MP's are underpaid for what they do. I am not saying that 82k is peanuts, but they need a decent payrise.

they pay the top rate of tax i would expect, then children's education if privately schooled, then maybe the amount doesn't seem so much.
Doctors get paid more, how is that right.

All MPs wages should be performance related. There are those who, once elected into office, barely go through the motions and are rarely seen and heard until elections approach. Then there are those who are totally dedicated to serving their constituencies, often going above and beyond. Yet both are paid the same.

Emmie, promises are made come election time. The constituents will know just how hard their MP has worked to make those promises a reality.

Doesn't matter how much you pay them. If an offer of a job they can do simultaneously comes along, many MPs will take it. That's not through necessity but pure greed. You only have to look at past expense claims to realise just how greedy some of our MPs are. Whatever flavour they may be.

Considering the top nobs at the other national institution (the BBC) are getting up to 40% pay rises I think MPs are relatively underpaid - however, there doesn't seem to be any problem regarding recruitment and retention!

My son earns more than that. He works regular hours, has nearly every weekend off and isn't lampooned by the media.
If you think that MPs are overpaid and have an easy ride, Hymie, why don't you go in to politics and reap those benefits?

I would have thought you go into politics to make a difference. Money should not be an issue as long as they earn enough to live comfortably on, which I think they do.

One of the main reasons MPs salaries are comparatively low is because the job entails representing the 'people' to the best of one's capabilities. Not lining your own pockets. Every time their salaries are assessed a pay rise is awarded. Then, almost to a man, they spew out the 'We don't deserve it, but we have to accept it" mantra.

If I was an MP struggling on £82k, I’d be thinking that this salary should be the countries minimum wage – why, as a people’s representative, would I expect my constituents to survive on anything less?

Strangely, not many MPs share my view.
