When I applied for my last job they did run a full credit check on me including all my credit agreements. (to be honest they did this illegally as they had not asked my permission, but since I only found out after I had the job, I didn't bother complaining).

i would assume that any finance company will at least search the register which they can do without your permssion to see if you have any ccjs.

They may also make an offer subject to a credit check.

Also, they took out an insurance policy that indemnified them in case of fraud - I had to supply the insurance company with all my prevoius jobs and they (I assume) took references from them and put the risk accordingly.

All reputable financial institutions will perform a search. My employer's offer letter said that my position was "subject to me meeting the bank's account opening criteria". In other words - the credit reference bureau checks which would be performed were in order.

I already held an account there anyway, but I know that they checked my accounts, mortgage and credit cards to ensure that they were operated satisfactorily. HR did an additional standalone search too to ensure that nothing adverse had happened recently.

it's also worth noting that they'll almost certainly apply for a government disclosure regarding any convictions or police cautions that you may have had in the past. I forgot about a minor offence of mine from a few years back and didn't declare this on my job application form. Only later did I discover that this would have been passed over if I had told them about it on the form.
