Too Shy To Apply For A Role

I have seen a job I would love to do, but due to my shyness and not being very worldly-wise (I get by, but I have lived a rather sheltered existence and have been a clean living person), I feel I will be a poor fit when it comes to the culture of where the role will be.  It's a male dominated environment and I'm not sure I'll 'survive' in it.  I worry I'll be taunted for my not 'being around the block', if you get me.

However, I like the sound of the role itself.  What should I do?  🤷‍♀️

Go for it Treacle, you don't have to stay if you don't like it. If you don't get it, it will be valuable interview experience

We need more information.  What is the job?

Question Author

Typing, brainiac.

Go for it - valuable experience whatever.

How do you know what the ethos of the staff is?

Question Author

Because I know the name of the company, naomi24.

Does it have a bad reputation then?

Question Author

Yes, Naomi.  But I love typing.

You may be setting up obstacles for yourself where none actually exist.  Apply for the job.  If you get it try it.  What's the worst that can happen?

Can't you get another typing job?  If you know the company has a bad reputation and you're reluctant to go for the job because you think you probably won't fit in with other members of staff, it's not the best of starts, is it.

Ask abbeylee.

Sexual harassment is now a crime - it's about time someone sorted out these blokes with such a neandertal attitude.

Is the job in a typing pool, and could you get colleagues joining in as well.

Question Author

I just feel so stupid ☹

Gosh I'm genuinely surprised the job of typist till exists. Surely it's data input these days?

Businesses still write letters, reports, minutes of meetings, etc., Auntypoll.

Yes Naomi they do it on a word processor not a typewriter.

Maybe "typist" is like "taping" a TV programme.

What an odd thing to say, Auntypoll.  You type on your computer, don't you?  I know I type on mine.

Go for it Treacle, you don't have to stay if you don't like it. If you don't get it, it will be valuable interview experience

It's not odd unless you want it to be odd. Typing pools no longer exist and I've not seen a job for a 'typist' advertised for ages. An office worker with the ability to type is not a typist. A typist was skilled at  touch typing using a typewriter, taking carbon copies, changing ribbons etc. Those  skills are no longer needed in an office environment, though I learnt touch typing at school and still do it if I'm on my laptop. I guess that's what I meant

🙄
