Can a shop decline to accept say �7.00 in 5 pences to pay for goods that you are buying from them. I thought that they had to accept coins as it is legal tender

Legal tender has nothing to do with it - it relates in some circumstances to repaying debts already incurred - not to everyday shopping.
5ps are only legal tender to �5 anyway.
