I am splitting up with my partner. We bought a house a couple of years ago and i really do not want to lose my home if i can help it. I was wondering if anyone knew of any financial help you can get if living on your own. I dont earn a fortune so i would be grateful for any help as otherwise i doubt i will be able to afford it.

well firstly your council tax bill can be reduced by 25% as you can claim single persons allowance. I think the best advice would be to call or visit your local citizens advice bureau. Ive been to them before for financial help and they were brilliant. Or there may be a benefits shop near you which will advise you of anything you are entitled to claim. it really depends on whether you rent or are buying your home but this site may be of some use to you

hope this helps x

If you hve a mortgage then theres very little financial help out there. If you can prove you have paid your mortgage all by yourself for 9 months then you can try asking housing benefit if they would pay the interest on your home. But this depends on your circumstances (eg if youve kids, CSA payments etc). If you rent then you can get housing benefit but usually only if you are on income support. Its a bit bleak im afraid but perhaps someone can come along and offer more help. What about renting a room to someone?

Hello there,

Don't know if you're still interested in having the loan, email me on [email protected] if you're still much interested in having the loan.

You own the house (jointly with your partner?). If you work more than 16 hours a week you cannot claim income support so cannot get any help with your mortgage interest. (Housing benefit is only for people who rent - it doesn't help with mortgages.)

If your income is low you may be able to get Working Tax Credit (www.hmrc.gov.uk) and, if you have children, Child Tax Credit.

You might also qualify for Council Tax Benefit (your local authority can tell you).

Ive just re-read my answer and realised that in error i said you may get help through housing benefit if you can prove that after 9 months you have paid your mortgage by yourself. I should have said that you can speak to your mortgage lender after 9 months. I did this through Abbey who are my lenders. They advised me they would consider me paying the interest only on my mortgage for a while if my circumstances changed after 9 months of paying the whole thing myself. In the end i got another job and am managing to pay mine. Sorry if ive confused you and hope ive not made it worse!!?!
