You would only be able to make a claim for a rebate based on the tax you paid in this financial year. As there are only about 5 weeks to the end of this financial year it wouldn't be much.
The tax year runs from the 6th April until the 5th April. After the end of the tax year take your p45 to your local tax office and they will work out for you the tax rebate due. As sparkles says this might not be too much but as Tesco says every little counts.
..... gammaray!!

It all depends whether you are eligible to claim benefits now. If so, you must give your P45 to the Jobcentre and they will make any refund you are due. Job Seekers Allowance is taxable, and will therefore need to be added to your total earnings for the current tax year in calculating the refund.

If you don't claim benefits, keep your P45 for your new employer; if you start a new job before 5 April, he/she will refund you any tax due for the weeks you were not working. If you start a new job after 5 April your current P45 is not valid, so you should send it to your tax office with a covering letter, to claim a refund.

As has been mentioned above, the refund will only be for the current tax year, and will equate to any unused personal allowances for the weeks you are not working, multiplied by your marginal rate of tax.

Thanks for that help . Would you suggest therefore that I should just claim unemployment benefit until starting a new job rather than trying to reclaim tax as this wont be much anyway ?
There's no reason why you shouldn't do both! You will entitled to Job Seeekers Allowance whilst you seek more work. The above posting was merely pointing out to you that you have to supply your P45 to the Jobcentre when you register.

At the end of the tax year, send your P60 or P45 to the tax office, then you should receive a cheque - simple as!

In 2003 I had the same job for that tax year and I was still entitled to a rebate of 100 for some reason, even though I had been employed for that whole tax year!
