If the property is in your name only I would have thought it belonged only to you. However, if it was bought on a mortgage and the mortgage was in somebody else's name and they default on payments, I'm not sure what position you would find yourself in as the mortgage company might then want to try and repossess the property. Hopefully somebody with with more knowledge than me on this topic will be able to advise you.

I believe there may have been Court cases on similar situations. I don't think you can assume it is yours. It probably depends on a lot of factors, such as - was it intended as a gift?; if so is there any independent evidence of this?; did the person who bought the house live there with you?; if so how long for?; did you contribute anything at all - mortgage payments, council tax, utility bills etc. - to the costs?

If it becmoes an issue between you and the other person you may well need legal advice.
